Benefits of Probiotics for Pets

Why Probiotics For Cats? Whether your cat is young, old, sedentary or coping with a disease, he or she will likely benefit from Probiotics. Probiotics are good bacteria that help to improve the immune system, gut health and even mood and attitude. Check out this great article below by Dr. Karen Becker, one of our favorite Vets, on the subject of probiotics for cats. “Your pet’s gut health plays a crucial role in their biological functions and protection against diseases. Probiotics are strains of gut-friendly live microorganisms that your pet can obtain from food sources or supplements. By reestablishing a balanced ratio of good-to-bad bacteria in your pet’s gut, probiotics may help promote optimal digestive function and reduce your pet’s risk of GI disorders.”Read More on Pet Probiotics….
Bringing Home A New Kitten

~~~ Preparing For Your New Kitten You have fallen in love with, and chosen, a Highland Lynx kitten and now you are just waiting for him/her to be old enough to leave Mom and come home with you. While you are enduring that difficult waiting period it is a good time to be sure you are totally prepared for a kitten to safely and happily join your home and family! *NOTE: It’s important to keep everything as familiar as possible for your new kitten. The adjustment to a new home goes more smoothly when your kitten has the same foods, litter, toys, etc. 4. Cat Bed – Your kitty will make itself at home on your lap, your bed, and all over the house, but it’s good to provide them with a bed of their own. Cats prefer beds with sides and soft centers where they can curl up and take cat naps or sleep beside you through the night. 5. You will also want to have on hand a pair of toenail clippers (or cat nail trimmers), a shedding brush or comb, a natural, gentle ear cleaner and perhaps a few safe cat toys such as balls and springs and fishing pole toys. 6. And finally, don’t forget the cat scratchers and posts. These are essential if you want to provide for your cats’ natural instincts as well as protect your furniture and your skin. A cat cannot help the urge to mark his space and if you don’t provide the appropriate alternatives, your kitten may choose the wrong place to sharpen his claws. 7. A note on cat trees/shelves, window perches, catios and cat grass……..-All cats love to be high above the ground because in the wild they would be able to survey their domain and feel safe from predators. While your kitten is small give them short trees and window perches and as they grow provide taller perches.-Felines also love to be outdoors (in a safe environment) where they can watch birds and squirrels and nap in the sun. If you want a truly happy cat, provide them with a safe outdoor habitat. There are myriads of great ideas for catios on the internet.-Every cat enjoys chewing a little grass now and then which actually serves several purposes. Growing wheat grass for your cat can provide fiber, help digestion and eliminate constipation. Regular grass chewing results in fewer hair balls and better smelling breath.
How To Choose A Healthy Kitten
~~~ Choosing a Healthy Kitten When you are preparing to purchase a new kitten you want to know that your investment is well spent and that you or your family will have a precious family member for many years to come. Here are some important things to know that can help you determine if a kitten is healthy and well adjusted. When you go to see the kitten(s) the first time, ask the breeder questions about the kitten such as their temperament, any Vet care they have had, how they get along with children and other pets, etc. Then sit on the floor near the kittens and observe them for the following:
DeClawing

~~~ DECLAWING There are so many negative aspects to declawing, it is difficult to know where to start. Many cat owners think it is a simple procedure involving removal of the claw, which could not be further from the truth! In reality, it is a painful and permanently crippling procedure where the first joint of each toe is cut off! Declawing involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe. If performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle! Some think that you put a cat under anesthetic and do a painless surgery and then their furniture and skin will be protected from the cats claws. The truth is far more devastating! Declawing a cat can have a number of adverse side effects, including pain in the paw, lameness, infection, dead tissue, nerve damage, bone spurs, and back pain. In addition to physical effects, declawed cats are also more likely to exhibit behavior changes such as increased aggression and biting, as they no longer have their primary defense mechanism. Another potential side effect of declawing is an increased vulnerability to stress, as the procedure can be traumatic for cats. It is also important to note that cats should not be allowed outside after they have been declawed, as they are unable to defend themselves against predators. Declawing is never an acceptable mutilation as far as Sherbobs is concerned and we will not sell to anyone considering this surgery for their kitten or cat. If you need help with alternative solutions for protecting your furniture or helping to prevent scratches while playing, please ask us for suggestions. We are always glad to help!
About Our Highland Lynx Cats
~~~ About Highland Lynx Cats Sher Bobs Exotic Cats lovingly raises cats from the Desert Lynx Breeding Group. This means Highland Lynx (curled ears), Desert Lynx (straight ears), Mohave Bobs (curly coat) and Alpine Lynx cats (white) as listed in the Rare Exotic Feline Registry. These 4 types of cats may be bred together as they are identical in body type. While we may occasionally have other breeds, we specialize in Highland Lynx kittens. These gorgeous cats have a number of unusual characteristics which set them apart from other breeds. Many of them have the trademark curled ears (they can range from barely curled back ears to tightly curled ), while others have large, straight wildcat ears. The tails can short bobtails or hock length tail as with the bobcat, or long tail as in domestic cats. The feet of this breed are often very large and poly-dactyl, meaning they have more than the normal number of toes (such as the famous Hemingway Cats which have Six or more toes per foot). And last but not least, the ears and toes are often tufted with fluffs of hair. The Highland Lynx – Desert lynx body type is long, strong & muscular, with longer hind legs. They tend to be larger than average cats with females weighing 8-15 lbs. at full maturity (3 years) and males 12-20 lbs. They are very playful, loving animals who make strong bonds with their families. These cats have stunning leopard or marble markings & come in a beautiful array of colors, such as bronze, snow, mink, chocolate, cream, blue, tawny, etc. Occasional “yips” or “chirps” and other types of vocal calling are often observed which is “a bit of the “wild” coming out but are very domesticated. They make wonderful family pets and get along well with dogs and other pets. They can be somewhat shy at first but will soon overcome shyness as their playful nature takes over with your loving care & plenty of room to play where they feel safe. They can be leash trained and often display dog like personality such as playing “fetch” or enjoying a bath with their owner. We feel certain that once you have a Highland or Desert kitten, you will never be the same…..and in fact may find that you need another one!
